"Speed Shift" is a fast rock tune for jazz band. I wrote the melody at the piano about a year ago and then this tune sort of arranged itself. As in many of my arrangements, the chord structure is quite complex, especially in the solo section, which uses many unrelated sus13 chords. The solo section is 60-84 with changes in the first alto, first trumpet and first trombone. The section is designed to be open, so bass, piano and/or guitar may solo as well. M.84-88 is to be played three times, with different instruments entering each time (a la Mintzer). This tune would make a great opener for any jazz band concert.
