"Grind Smooth" is a tune I wrote for jazz combo around 13 years ago. While most of my songs have unusual chord progressions, this song emphasizes melody over harmony, thus not many chord progressions until m.99. At this point, the melody is re-harmonized with some really cool big band type chord-hits. The feel is easy Latin and the rhythms are pretty straight-forward. The soli section at m.79 is particularly nasty, but only scored for the leaders of each section. The solo changes feature the lead alto. Overall, this tune is a pretty cool addition to the Latin genre of any big band's repertoire. |
