Latest Additions To The Catalog

Airport Blues

Airport Blues is a standard blues chart for the young jazz band. The melody is the blues tune used for the Arkansas state junior jazz band tryouts, set 3. The solo section is open, ready for anyone ready to play some Bb blues.

Robots Unite
by Rhodes, Brian
Robots Unite is a composition for the young band. Science fiction has long been obsessed with the idea of robots taking over the planet. This work would be appropriate as a soundtrack to a B movie about robots taking over.

A few other techincal notes:

1) The oboe part was derived from the flute and edited for range.
2) The bari sax part was derived from the tuba part and edited for range.
3) The trash can in the percussion part needs to be an aluminum can, slightly elevated for resonance and played with heavy snare drum sticks.

Christmas Concert 2 for 1
by Rhodes, Brian
Christmas Concert 2 for 1 was arranged for the Booneville, AR Beginning Band in the Fall of 2013 as part of the annual Booneville Christmas Concert. A few technical notes:

1) The baritone sax is not on the score, but doubles the tuba part and is edited for range.

2) There are lots of percussion parts, but the only essential parts are bass drum and snare drum. Use the others as personnel allows.

3) The mallet part can be played on any mallet instrumet available (bells, xylophone, etc.)

Traveling Grace
by Colquitt, Don
A few years ago, I saw an article on the discovery of a flute made of bird bone in a cave in Germany. They dated the instrument to be over 42,000 years old. At that time, it was the oldest musical instrument yet discovered. Researchers discovered the flute was designed to play a pentatonic scale. This fascinated me because pentatonic scales are used in all types of music from every part of the world. Researchers also believe that the flute was probably used for religious ceremonies. Because it was designed to play a pentatonic scale, you can play Amazing Grace, a song written in the late 1700s, over 43,000 years after the flute was made.

I wrote several pieces based on pentatonic scales. I harmonized these tunes with non-traditional harmonies. Traveling Grace is one of the tunes that came out of this period. It is my attempt to write a modern folk song.

moon always follows me home, the
by Colquitt, Don
This piece is inspired by a quote from my grandson Kohen, who was almost 3 years old at the time. It was January of 2019 on the night of the blood moon lunar eclipse. Kohen was with us and had to go home before the eclipse, so we told him to get his Dad to let him watch the moon later that night. He said, I can see the moon in the window of my daddys truck. The moon always follows me home. I thought that was a very poetic thing for a 3-year old to say, so I went to work the next day on this piece - a lullaby for Kohen.

I have the tempo at 96 bpm, changing to 108 bpm. I would stay close to these tempo markings as possible so that it is not too slow. Be careful balancing the solos with the ensemble. The style is very legato throughout. Notes marked with tenuto should be tongued but sound slurred. Pay close attention to the dynamics for a more musical performance. This piece would be appropriate for a mature junior high band or any high school band.
